DRAMATIC TECHNIQUES FOR DOCUMENTARY ON THE LIFE OF JESUS

David Feinstein

For now, all we have to show of the Temple is a miniature.
At angles, a kind of vacant and unfurnished dollhouse to poke about.
In this way then, if it is a question of scale
Or, rather, forgetfulness, we all get to play god.
More or less, though brought to the level of suits and ties
Not quite ready to forsake some general, yet bucolic landscape.
This breadth, however, always seems necessary.
At least, according to the aerial view of the desert, it must be.
In rewind, a cloud shrinks then grows
Approximating, slightly, the physical facts of today’s forecast.
From the skyscrapers, for instance, you can tell—
How the traffic leads slowly out, sloping towards the glorious infrastructure.
Beneath the whispers, a foreign and climbing music,
This casual desperation hums, inhabits our vespers.
